Matt Veach

   February 10th, 2009

Well, last Saturday was a great day for the gym.  We went 4-0 with the pros and 2-2 with the amateurs.  As most of you know.  I was down in Florida with Matt Veach as he had his first fight in the UFC.  Had a great time down there and it was a great fight as well.  A little controversy with how it ended, as Veach got knocked down earlier and the ref didn’t stop it (which was obviously the right call, since he came back and won the fight), then Veach knocked down his opponent, threw several punches and it got stopped.  If you go back and watch the fight, there is a big difference in how those two acted when they hit the ground.  When Veach got knocked down, he never stopped moving.  I think that was the big key to his success.  When Veach’s opponent got knocked down, he didn’t move and continued to get hit.  So, lesson learned.  The other guys fought all over, so congratulations to Matt Veach, Kyle Watson, Amir Khillah, Mike Hahn, TJ Thomas and Neil Magny for their wins this weekend.

I usually don’t do this, but I will this time.  When I talk about a topic one week, it usually doesn’t get brought up again.  I think a lot of people need to go back and reread last week’s blog, including GSP.  At no point did I accuse Georges of putting grease on himself.  All I said was that he felt slick.  I’ve wrestled over a thousand matches, fought 50 opponents, all I’ve ever done in life is wrestle and compete with other people.  With all that experience, do you think I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between sweat and something else?  Last week when I got to Florida, I was in the elevator with Robbie, I said “Robbie did you hear about GSP?”  He said, “No, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”  I then said that BJ accused him of being slippery, Robbie looked right up at me and said, “That’s what you said after Sacramento.”  Also, I’ve had several people close to me around my town who have come up to me and said the same thing.  I’ve nothing against GSP, I even think he’s somewhat a likable guy.  Some people are trying to say that I’m making this personal and that’s just not true at all.  The reason I didn’t bring this up before was because I didn’t know there was anything to him being slick.  With all the other guys coming out and saying the same thing, I just wanted to be true to myself, and to everybody else, and say that there could be some validity there.  -matt

You never accused GSP of anything……it should have not even been made such a big deal and blown out of proportion…….enough said, on to a new topic…..Congrats to Matt Veach! Way to go! Have a great week, Matt!

bonnie Says:

Matt,

From everything I’ve read and seen (your book and when you’ve spoken radio and on camera), you’ve always come across as totally open and honest. When I read your book, I was surprised at just how open and honest you were (pleasantly so). I was even more surprised at what Audra okayed for you to put in there, but I’m glad she did. It’s one of the things I like most about you, Matt. You are what I like to call “true blue”!

justin in taylorville Says:

great job matt veach you fought one hell of a fight and should have got knockout of the nite..but its all good….cant wait to see ur next fight

Chris Williams Says:

It is what it is

Chris Williams Says:

Kind off of topic but since it is cheating what is your thoughts on the whole A-Rod thing. i know people have used steroids in mma, but have you ever had people in your gym or Pats that used them? If so how did you deal with them?

Greg Says:

I caught that Magny Fight. He must of learned how to finish a fight in 3 mins at the H.I.T squad, Good stuff! Good luck to him the rest of the way, the kid looks promising!

Tyburn Says:

Dear Mr Hughes,

There is absolutely nothing wrong with voicing an opinion, and anyone who read the blog properly could see you stopped short of an accusation. The problem is that you are not the only one to have noticed this…and before people speak conspiracy, perhaps they should note that there is no loved lost between some of the people who are suggesting the same thing is a possibility. Did he cheat, we will never know…but if he is innocent then one can certainly cite neglect between rounds as a fault.

lol@ the “somewhat likeable” comment hahahahahaaha

ILTroop Says:

Great job Matt Veach, looking forwad to seeing more from you in the future!

I totally got the GSP comment, I thought it was strait forward and clear the first time. Apparently some words got misconstrued in its translation to French.

T.J. McClaskey Says:

I saw matt veach at the H.I.T. Squad grand opening, and couldnt wait to see him advance. awesome job veach, and to you Hughes. chalk up another success for the H.I.T. Squad. As matt said, he is shoots straight from the hip. no need to sugar coat anything.

ILTroop Says:

Just read that Karo Parisyan tested positive for pain killers for his last fight. Thought it was funny because Matt said that he thought Karo looked sick or something in that fight.

Tyler Says:

Hey Matt. you’re boy fought a great fight. He showed alot of heart when he got in trouble. That shows some good character and training.

About your recent comments about GSP. I think it just needs to be let go. I still believe it was something you needed to address before. There is and was no point to any comments you made about him feeling greasy. Your legacy has always been about class and I feel that if you continue along this path you put that legacy in peril.

Thanks as always for letting me post and I can’t wait to see you lay a beating on that bum Serra. Also congrats on all your teams victories. That is what I want to remember Matt Hughes for

MICHAEL HAMLIN Says:

great job veach i knew you could do it train everyday to be the best you can be and dont be afraid to branch out to different camps for help too that will make you a master of your art faster go for it veach i cant wait to see you fight again

JP Says:

Great job, Matt! Keep up the great work and looking forward to your blogs. About the GSP being slippery, indeed, there’s something there. time will tell.
cheers!

Adrian Says:

Hey Matt have you ever found some ppl to be just more slippery then others? Or did the GSP thing really stand out as a baaad slippery in your mind?

Mike Randolph Says:

Matt,
When I read your first comments on GSP I must admit I was a little confused because I was not sure how the two comments “I’m not saying GSP did something wrong” and “for my last two fights against Georges, he felt greasy” reconciled with each other. Now, I’m even more confused by your comment that “…there could be some validity there.” I don’t doubt you when you say you are not accusing him of anything; I am just saying that I am confused by your comments. My confusion stems from the fact that I have absolutely no wrestling experience and therefore have no grasp of how someone could feel greasy and not be greasing. For novice/casual MMA observers such as myself a little clarification would be great.

MP Says:

I agree with Tyler. About the only time I ever post on a board is when someone is taking a potshot at Matt. Just didn’t feel the GSP comments were appropriate this long after their fights. GSP’s been training his heart out since September for the fight and it’s like they’re pretending the fight was even remotely close.

Makes me think of when BJ’s fans ( and BJ ) were howling about his “injury” in his second fight with Matt being the reason he lost. First, the guy cheated by grabbing Matt’s trunks to begin with and second, injuries are part of the sport. Nonetheless, there are legions of people out there that will try to convince you that the victory was tainted. I don’t believe it in Matt’s fight and I don’t believe it in GSP’s fight.

Kimberly Says:

Lets all jsut let people speak their mind and move on. If the guy is greasy it will come back to him one day, if he’s not, then alls good! Let’s just move on to more positive subjects like Veach, AWESOME fight, can’t wait to see more of him.

Matt, thanks for being the way you are, don’t ever change! Take care.

Kimberly

Hey Matt!

Veach looked good. i’m really happy for him and i hope he continues to progress. Should be a force!

I saw that you and Robbie are coming to virginia in a couple of weeks for the UWC fights at the patriot center. that’s less than 5 mins from my house. A few of us from the forums were thinking of meeting up with you. (kim, ben…sorry, no boomer )

would you guys like to grab sushi or something?

MELISSA VILLASENOR Says:

Matt,
First of all congratulations Matt Veach and HIT Squad members!! Secondly Matt I am so glad you came out and brought the GSP subject up again and firmly stand behind what you said!! Those with minimal education can even grasp that you weren’t making accusations. I do disagree with you though that GSP is a likeable guy :( I just don’t see it.. Also Matt can you please keep motorx rider Jeremy Lusk in your prayers please. He died Tuesday after crashing head first on Saturday in Costa Rica performing. He was such a good guy and his family and friends need all the support they can get.
<3 love, peace, and happiness,

John King Says:

Matt,

Thanks for caring about how we feel about your comments. I don’t care what anyone says, you are the ONLY fighter I have seen that not only updates his fans each week, you always are honest and give your opinions on all subjects even if it doesn’t go with popular vote. I appreciate your honesty and it doesn’t bother me that you are not afraid to mention how you feel because you don’t take anything away from anyone.

Matt Veach, you did a great job. You have the fighting spirit and you have well rounded skills, keep working on all of them and you will go far with the crowd you are hanging around with.

I would like to hear about your training for Serra. Thanks, God Bless.

Dennis Says:

GSP seems like the type of guy who uses skin moisturizes, not meant to be an insult. But he seems to lay in a tanning bed as well. Once again not meant to insult GSP.

josh Says:

Its called stirring the pot.

John King Says:

Dennis, did you say GSP likes to have men rub skin moisturizer on him? Obviously that is not what you said, you were polite and honest but that is what happens to Matt Hughes when he tries to say a simple opinion like you did. Just joking obout the comment but that’s how I feel about other people(not you, I mean GSP fans, etc.) that takes what Matt says out of context. thanks

scott Says:

hey matt , I live in your home town. I graduated with your wife Audra. I just think you are a true hero to the sport of mma and a true hero to Hillsboro. Tell Brian Patten I said hey. He was my Jr. high track & field couch.

Mike Says:

Matt…you are the best….but you are accusing him…while not openly and directly…of possible cheating.

You said…he felt slick…others told you he felt slick…now you heard it from BJ….and so there might be some validity to the accusation…which is you saying…in retrospect, that you think he might be unnaturally slick. Not a bad thing for you to say that…but it is what you said.

John King Says:

Matt, I agree with Mike that you are the best ever!! I don’t agree that you were wrong with what you said and I appreciate your honesty always. Thanks again for the website. Can we talk about your training for Serra and not give GSP our slick superstar anymore attention. God Bless

Ken McKinley Says:

Matt,
Thanks for all that you do.
To those who want to accuse Matt, why the double standard? GSP says he didn’t grease you defend him, Matt Hughes says he’s not accusing GSP of cheating and you in turn accuse Matt of lying or worse.
If GSP knowingly greased, then rest assured Numbers 32:23 applies to him just as it does to us all.

God bless you Matt.

Alby Says:

GSP and Penn are probably going to meet again. I have a similar body-type to BJ but I know that doing a fair amount of compound exercises (e.g. squats, benches, rows) can easily add some good muscle.

Maybe we’ll see a fight with lots less controversy then.

Also, Matt, I hope to see you in top form soon for that fight with Serra. Maybe we’ll see a Matt Hughes with some good footwork next time to match up with your excellent power. I know you can do it.

God bless.

Jon Says:

Hey Matt,

Can’t wait for the Serra fight. As far as GSP the guy rubs me the wrong way in general…can’t really say why he just does…also maybe you can update us sometimes about the status of Mark’s return to fighting. I think it was after you Alves fight you’d mentioned him being ready to sign with the UFC just curious about when that could happen or if it will. But anyway keep on keeping on you inspire all of us!!

Dustin Says:

Matt i belive you!

Nick Says:

Well, what if GSP does use a moisturizer? Is that illegal? No. It is actually healthy especially after a big weight cut. All smart fighters should do it.

There are certain moisturizer that really lock up in your skin until you start sweating profusely, so you can be more slippery in the fight. Yeah it’s an advantage, but not an illegal cheating strategy.

Plus, a big blob of vaseline from an eyebrow could be spread over opponent’s back when you defend the takedown…or just hitting him when he’s inside your guard. You will get slippery.

GSP beat his opponents not by being slippery, but by being stronger, faster, and more technical. Also, smarter.

Rick Says:

First of all – thanks Matt V for a real entertaining fight to watch, and thanks Matt H for your part in getting this guy where he is – if he continues to improve WOW. I look forward to following the future fights and wish him well.
Nick has made some good points re GSP.

I asked a question in the blog of the original greasing post – what are fighters initial reactions after losing to GSP. I mean right after the fight is called – I’m guessing fighters are aware of GSPs strength, speed, timing, power etc That GSP is using technique and strategy in his fights should not be forgotten. That GSP was greasy may be an observation, but let’s be serious – there’s a lot more to GSP than that, and let’s not undermine GSP as a man and a fighter. I think people may be forgetting this – if I put on a mountain of vaseline I don’t have a chance of beating Matt H or BJ Penn. If BJ is pointing to this the way he is, all it does is make BJ look bad and demonstrate that BJ is in denial regarding other reasons why he may have lost…

I appreciate Matt H integrity in that he has acknowledged with humility times he has lost, giving credit to GSP, and then at the same time he has his other observations – these two facts should go together, and they lend credibility to Matt H in my mind, unlike with BJ. BJ is coming off like the only reason he lost was due to whatever small amounts of grease may or may not have been on GSP, and that’s why he’s being viewed as a crybaby by so many. At least there were no eye pokes by BJ like in his last two welterweight fights.

There may or may not be deliberate wrongdoing, but people need to separate the issues – even if Jackson and/or nurse did something deliberately wrong let’s remember that GSP is a great fighter. For example, when I watch GSPs standup against Hughes and Fitch fights I see some real talent there with timing, controlling distance, great jab technique etc. Let’s give GSP the benefit of the doubt, make sure the issues are not repeated, and move on.

Kyle Says:

Hey all,

Congrats to Matt V, he looked really good. Look forward to seeing him fight again. Congrats to all of the Hit Squad team.

On to the GSP topic. Alot of us are commenting on how we don’t don’t like this person or that person. There are very few people posting that really know any of the fighters. So we should all refrain from commenting on how you don’t like someone.

I do think that this greasing subject is important. I also think it has now been solved with the new rules instituted by the UFC. In my opinion, I don’t think GSP had a clue about vaseline being applied to his back. As to whether his corner did or not, I think they new exactly what they were doing. How could anyone be that dumb. They are professionals. The breathing technique seems like a perfect excuse to transfer this vaseline to GSP’s shoulders and back. They could do it without GSP even realising what is going on. Remember, they have
motive. If you are Greg Jackson and you have the champ in your camp, it equals more revenue in the long run. His camps are fairly expensive I am sure. I do not think that GSP would go along with such a scheme. The
training that he does and the amount of heart that he puts into it. I highly doubt he would put so much effort into something only to have it taken away for something so foolish. GSP doesn’t need any vaseline to beat anyone.

I am glad all of this has resulted in rule changes that will not allow this to happen again. I also hope to see a rematch between BJ and GSP. I can just about guarantee it would go the same way. BJ thinks he got ripped off because he couldn’t use his BJJ. GSP would have nullified BJ’s BJJ with or without vaseline. It may have taken a little more effort without vaseline but the outcome would be the same.

So if you are reading this BJ you had better train differently for a rematch with GSP, because if you go in thinking that you lost just due to some vaseline you will have your butt handed to you again. I am still a fan of BJ’s by the way. I like GSP and I am still a Matt Hughes fan.

Everyone has to realise that what you see on TV is not the real person. Alot of it is hype to sell tickets. These shows are twisted for the most dramatic effect to help Dana sell tickets. He is smart because it works. It works people up and they get excited for the fight. He is a promoter after all.

Just some opinions. Keep it cool everyone. Take care!!

Connor Veach Says:

Matt thats cool that you fight. I was just wondering if we were related cause that would be cool if i was related to a fighter.
