Update on Chuck

   October 14th, 2009

My buddy Chuck got eliminated this week from Dancing with the Stars. I was kind of surprised because I thought he did fairly well and a couple of the other contestants did worse. I’m sure Chuck never would have thought that it would be the 2-step that eliminated him; but, I was glad to see that at least he looked like he was having a good time out there.

(Photo from

I also heard that the Simpsons had him as a character on their cartoon.

I’m glad people see Chuck as the face of the UFC, he is one of the good guys that has been there since near the beginning.

I got this forwarded to me and I thought it was a great quote from Adrian Rogers. This has shown up on other sites with the date of 1931; but that’s the year Dr. Rogers was born, not the year he made this statement (Wikipedia dates the quote at 1996). I like to try and check out anything that I post, which is not always possible; but I don’t like to post something if I’m not at least reasonably sure it’s true.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. -Adrian Rogers

I also got this new video from my buddy and thought I would break it out here:

Not much going on in the fighting world that I know of, but a dilemma we have at home right now is whether to get the Swine Flu vaccine or not. I’ll be paying extra close attention to the comments this week to see what advice everyone has: Get the vaccine or don’t?

Finally the Bible verse for this week:

Remember Your promise to me, O Lord, it is my only hope. Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles. (Psalm 119:49-50)

Great quote from Dr. Rogers. If you like his stuff i would suggest checkin out another preacher, Jeff Schreve. He is at

scott Says:

Yeah, get the vaccine. I’ve got kids about the age of yours and our youngest had what was “probably” the H1N1 flu. Nothing major: 2 days of medium-severe flulike symptoms, another 2 of recovery. But unpleasant. We just got the vaccine in town, and we just made an appointment for our older daughter to get it. Personally, I never get the vaccine and never get sick, but it’s a logical choice: an infinitesimal risk that prevents the more serious risk of getting the flu. Although the vast majority of those who get it will be like my daughter, for a few it will be serious, even life-threatening. And of course you’re likely to get it if your kids do (I was lucky), and then maybe take it to the HIT Squad and give it to Todd Laux, and . . . well, I had a downside there for a moment.

Thrash Says:

I’ve been hearing some scary stuff about the risks with the vaccine. I had H1N1. It was rough, but I got out fine on the other side. But I’m not a doctor. You should probablely ask yours. Too bad for Chuck. He’s been one of my favorite fighters for a long time. His spotlight stock seems to be rising though. I think he might still have a little entertainment in him after he retires.

scott Says:

A follow-up to my earlier post. The key thing here is that the risk of either decision is infinitesimal, blown out of all proportion by the media. The mortality rate of H1N1 is about 1 in 1000, and less than that in healthy kids who receive good medical care. The major side effect of the vaccine is GBS, a neurological disorder that occurs once out of every million vaccines (the H1N1 shot is identical to regular flu shots in this regard), and it has a mortality rate of less than 1%, with the vast majority of sufferers recovering in 2-3 weeks. For that risk, you’re getting for your kids some significant (but not perfect) protection from a sickness that is, in virtually every case, an unpleasant (but hardly life-threatening) 3-7 day affair. Either way, the danger is a tiny fraction of what your kids face traveling to school.

MattHughesRocks Says:

Matt, people have to leave the show based on votes, not talent. That’s why the show makes no sence in the first place but I’m guessing it’s fun to do.
The flu shots are different for different people. I don’t think you’ll really know how it’s going to effect you until youve done the deed. Then sometimes it’s too late. I got SO sick when I got one a few years back…won’t do it again. Then some people will just swear by them.
Go figure ;-P

Steve Gates Says:

Here is my view on the Vaccine. My family, like yours, are Christians and we totally believe that God alone is our protector not the vaccine. We are not getting our vaccinated. I understand that the Swine flu is a serious situation, but thats why Jesus took the lashes, by his stripes we are healed. I pray all the time that God will raise up a hedge around my family. His promises are true. He is not a man that he should lie.

Hope this helps.

Respectisearned Says:

About the flu shots… I’m not a doctor, so I wouldn’t be the one to help you weigh out the pros and cons… But pray about it Matt, you’ll find the right answer that way.

John Hanselman Says:

Thanks for the update about Chuck! I didn’t watch Chuck’s last dance performance. I watched the show twice only because Chuck was a contestant. My wife is a ballroom dancer and she said he deserved to remain on the show.

I really appreciate the quote from Adrian Rogers. I wish he was still alive so I could vote for him.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any facts and figures to assist you with your decision about the swine flu shot. When I was a volunteer ambulance worker I would get all my annual shots including my flu shot, just like I was the family dog. I hope you and the people around you remain healthy!

You have a great website!

-John Hanselman

HughesFan Says:

I’m not surprised that Chuck’s time ran out though I was rooting for him to stay longer. He just looked so uncomfortable. I had all my family voting for him but now all of our votes will go to Kelly. As for the H1N1 vaccine, there’s absolutely no way I’m having something injected into my kids that went through a week or two long trial/testing period. We’ll all get the seasonal flu shot and pray that’s enough. Hope you and Mark had a great birthday and that Audra is feeling good in the pregnancy.

Shooter girl Says:

Matt~ I hated to see Chuck go! Im with HughesFan, chuck looked soooo uncomfortable. He was obviously way out of his comfort zone but he DID look like he was having a good time! I also will be rooting for Kelly Osborn now. Shes a neat kid! As for H1N1, my mother in law is a nurse and like me she has mixed feelings. Its always a good idea to get a vaccine however, because of the rapid spreading of the illness the vaccine didnt stay in the testing phase near as long as it would have otherwise. We have found also that the media CANNOT be trusted to inform the public of ALL issues and aspects so my best advice would be to go to a medical professional that you trust and allow them to answer all the questions you have. My doctors advice when it comes to my families health is gold! I have a 5 year old son and a 14 year old daughter, I leave nothing to chance when it comes to them. I love the quote from Adrian Rogers, we sooo need to get back to the basics in this country.

Castor Says:

Matt – To bad for Chuck, he did a great job. I don’t think anybody expected him to get as far as he did. I’m sure
he had some fun and that’s all that matters. That Adrian Rogers quote was amazing! And so true. As for
swine flu, it depends on your past is all. I personally believe taking vitamins, eating healthy, drinking
plenty of fluids and staying clean (hands, stay away from sick people) is all you really need. Of course
everybody has a different reaction. Some people develop the flu from the injection, some don’t. I would
also check to see if the flu is going around in your area or at your kids schools. Take it from there. Anyway
take care Matt, I can’t wait till you fight again. I hope you go old school and slam someone thru the mat.

Maria Says:

I never watched the DWTS – but I’m sad to hear he was voted off :(
I’m not a fan of flu shots at all….I’m sure you & your family are healthy & take precautions (hand washing, etc) so my vote is to keep up the vitamin C…get lots of rest….and eat good foods! Also I hope Audra’s pregnancy is going well! Can’t wait to find out what you’re going to have!! The baby will be beautiful that is for certain =]

Wendy Says:

I Say no on the Swine-flue vaccine. My sister-in-law works for at a doctor’s office and told my not to get it for my daughter, it is so new that you don’t know what some of the side effects are yet, or what long term effects there may be. She said to get the regular flu vaccine that that will help with the swine flu as well.

Bonedoc Says:

Happy late B-day Matt. The chance of you or your kids getting swine are probably slim. This is the season for any cold or flu, so its scaring everybody. Here in Texas the swine has caused deaths but only to those who were already had health complications and their immune system compromised. I’m very pro-natural and believe in keeping my kids and myself pumped up with good nutrition and lots of good fruits. In my opinion those things are going to do more good than anything else. Pray about it and get peace with your decision brother. You canj’t go wrong there.

Joe Dunn Says:

Hey Matt, I know this doesn’t have anything to do with Chuck or the Swine Flu vaccination.
I caught one of your previous fights last night against Joe Riggs. You were awesome! That guy talked some smack and only got it delivered to him. He was a bigger and supposedly stronger opponent although he didn’t say he was stronger and you submitted him pretty quickly. I don’t know what is in your future career wise but I hope that you take the title again.
I really think it is cool that you have a strong faith in Jesus and you use your influence to pass the word. Good Luck and God Bless you and your family.

Ken McKinley Says:

Hey Matt,
Yeah I watched Chuck on DWTS, to be honest he wasn’t that good, but it was great to see him working at something.
As for the swine flu… both of my daughters have had it, they ran a fever and were out of school for a couple of days, but other than that, they came out of it just fine.
I want to post a link that I think you (and everyone else here) should watch concerning the swine flu. I’ll understand if you don’t allow it on your page.
I spoke with some old timers in my church and they rememberd the swine flu from 76′. One of them was in college and had to get the shot, he said it made him really sick, but he eventually recovered.
Hope all is well

Cpl Whitaker Says:

I am a medic and want to tell you from two stand points. one, i actually got the swine flu (diagnosied) along with a friend and his kid. yes it sucks, it is the flu x3 but its not lethal unless you ignore it. with that being said, the cdc actually on their site gave info which the above info giving is wrong. the first 100 shot giving to children in the us, 19 died from a reaction. out of 100 pregnant woman who recieved it, 25 died! thats 1 in 4! so i say no but its a personal choice for you and your family matt. I PERSONALLY as a medic have had two receiptants die in transit from this vaccine. not trying to scare you, just be forward. i told my relatives the same. basically just watch your family if you dont get it. if they get sick, take them to the doctor. its very treatable if you just watch for it. beside its an untested vaccine. wait a year or two to see what happens. must vaccines go ten years of testing before they get distrubuted for use. something to think about

Gerry Says:

I have worked in the medical field for 25 years and have not received a vaccine for the flu. Over the years, I have seen many individuals get the flu vaccine and still get the flu. 10 years ago, while working in a hospital in NC, 200 employees who received the flu vaccine were tested for influenza with no symptoms and 96 came back positive for influenza. An individual can test positive for the influenza virus and have no symptoms. A recent study in the Pediatric Journal of medicine, found the flu vaccine to be ineffective for the past 3 years. Death rates from the flu can be very misleading and over estimated. We recently had a death at our local hospital and the cause of death reported in the paper, was due to the swine flu. There was no mention of her end stage renal disease, end sage heart disease and diabetes. The swine flu did not cause her death; it was her end stage renal disease and heart disease that caused her death. Many in the medical profession feel that the CDC grossly over estimates the death rates per year for the flu. As for me, I will not take the vaccine.

allan Says:

Hey matt!
so first off i heard your fighting in ufc 110, but you dont know who your fighting yet….cant wait to see! second dont get the shot! its just a flu thats why we have immune systems!!!!!!! have a good one, allan!!!!!!!

CountryGirl Says:

I am home with the swine flu. It seems each person reacts differntly, i have been very sick and couldn’t get out of bed for three days. Aching body, pounding headache, cough ,congestion, high fever….I don’t know how a little one can handle this. I have two daughters and have not got the vaccine for them. Seriously does that make sence?

I went to the Dr. he prescribed tamiflu for me. I of course go home get on internet and read all the negative side effects .Scared me, so i didn’t take it. My hubby came down with a few symptoms and started taking it and he is much better and I am fighting it still. So, who knows the right answer.

I am cleaning sheets, carrying around lysol, and wearing a mask as not to infect kids!! Pure craziness!!!

Dustin Says:

I wouldent Matt, I will take my chances. Just wash your hands! haha

Keith Says:

I think Country Girl said it best. Who knows the right answer. I work in a hospital in the st. louis area. The infectious disease doctors I spoke with regarding the swine flu all strongly recommended getting the vaccine. One stated it would be neglegent of someone with direct pt. contact not to get vaccinated(seasonal or swineflu) if they could. I think a lot of the scares with vaccinations came from one possibly being linked to autism. Vaccinations prevent deadly dieases though this is a new vaccine I will be getting vaccinated if it’s available. I have two toddlers under two and work in direct contact with imunnocompromised patients I don’t want any thing on my conscience. Now who’s next your kiling me I would love to seeyou bust up a young gun I’d also like to see Penn or Serra again. What about a drop to light weight I don’t know if that’s possible for you or not but if it is you could bust some folks up there. sherk diego and penn cand make the cut are you that much bigger just wondering. You probably are you looked huge at ufc 98. good luck and one more thing about the swine flu never underestimate the importance of HANDWASHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE ABSOLUTE BEST PREVENTION.

John King Says:

Matt, Vacationing in Colorado, seen some monster elk 2o feet away, wish I was hunting them. We are torn on the vacinne and right now we are not going to have them take it. I hate Chuck is off but he did real good. Hope you are training and getting ready to fight someone, hope to hear soon who it is. God Bless.

brad Says:

Read this before taking the vaccine!

I belive this vaccine is very dangerous, i will NOT take it! Hope you make the right choice matt..

brad Says:

I meant offcourse watch this, not read..

Ashley Says:

I think the fact that Audra is pregnant is reason enough to get the vaccine.

John King Says:

Matt, WOW!! I know you probably won’t get this but we made it home and all I can say is thanks to you and all your guys. Todd(your secretary ha), Matt, Nate, and all the fighters I don’t care what anyone says you are all down to earth and great people to be around. I’m sorry to drop in like that but that gym is awesome. If you are looking to get into fighting you need to join their camp!!! Thanks again. I hope to make it back again. God Bless.

CountryGirl Says:

I now have pnemonia from swine flu. I went to dr. today and they recommended for anyone that is out and about to clean your nostrils with warm salt water and to gargle with listrine. We had our girls do it tonight….Thought that might help….

keith Says:

countrty girl i feel for you I am sure the rest of your family will remain healthy and free of the swine flu rest up. My wife got vaccinated yesterday. I am waiting for it to be accessible in the hospital I work at. Scary stuff.

Ministry Addict Says:

Getting the flu shot may be safer than watching the Simpsons or Dancing with the Stars. “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.” Psalm 101:3

Matt M. Says:

Anyone’s decision to get ANY vaccine is personal, but there’s a lot of misinformation about the H1N1 vaccine, some of it being repeated here. First and foremost: YOU CANNOT GET THE FLU FROM A FLU SHOT. The disease in the vaccine is DEAD. There is no possible way to get the disease from the shot. (FluMist is a different story, so stick with the injection.)

There are some risks with the vaccine, but getting the flu is not one of them. Because flu shots are given (of course) during cold/flu season, people may get sick from a cold or other flu strain soon after getting a vaccine and blame it on the shot. That is not the case.

In addition, the H1N1 vaccine is made in the SAME WAY and in the SAME FACILITIES as the seasonal flu shot. The only difference is that it offers protection against the H1N1 strain. Had the H1N1 strain emerged earlier in the season, it simply would have been incorporated into the seasonal vaccine for this year and been administered as one shot. This is not new or experimental medicine. Tens, if not hundreds, of millions of flu shots have been given over the years with an extraordinarily low rate of serious side effects.

Finally, H1N1 is disproportionately affecting children and young adults. Not already-sick children and young adults, but perfectly healthy ones. It seems that the disease burrows deeper into the lungs than the seasonal flu. Opportunistic bacteria can then follow and cause serious, deadly lung infections.

No matter what you decide about the vaccine, please wash your hands or use hand sanitizer regularly and stay home when sick to prevent the spread of disease.

Anthony Russell Says:

Hey Matt, long time reader but finally bothered to leave you a comment.

A good read, but the Adrian Rogers quote troubles me somewhat. I am all for people pulling themselves up by their boot straps but if people aren’t willing to help them get boots, what is to be done? Surely the point of a government is they work FOR us and that means helping people that end up disadvantaged as a result of the unfair economic system used in your country and mine (Britain). The Bible means a lot to both of us and remember that it is easier for the Camel to pass through the eye of the needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:24).
The student pastor at my church once said it best, the only reason we have money is to give it away to better serve Jesus. Jesus calls on us to help the poor, the less fortunate, the downtrodden and that’s what we have in our society. Sometimes just giving to charity and hoping something happens just doesn’t cut it and we have to be more proactive. In Britain we’re lucky that we have a system (not a perfect one but one that works to some degree) where my tax money goes to mean that people can get free healthcare and help whilst they’re unemployed. Do people abuse that system? Sure they do, people are not perfect as we both know but it’s the people as a whole consenting to a system that holds out its hand and says “I want to help you help yourself” and that to me is very much Christ-like.

As for the H1N1 vac, just remember that the one made by GSK was cultivated in eggs and if you have an allergy you will need the other one. Otherwise, entirely up to you.

God bless, Deuteronomy 31:8

Ray Says:

I am not a doctor, but deal with them on an everyday basis. I am a pharmacy technician, so I deal with prescriptions, doctors, and what to take, what not to take questions every day. Honestly, I wouldn’t get the vaccine. It’s too untested. That should be enough said. Would a hard working person like you normally inject themselves with something they are unsure of? Doubt it! Besides the goverment themselves aren’t relaying all the facts, nor are they relaying the side effects. Working in the Pharmacy world you kind of get the inside scoop from doctors and Pharmaceutical Reps. Don’t take my word though, you haven’t gotten where you are now with my help that’s for sure! Take Care of you and Yours!!!

Jonathan Moorhead Says:

It’s almost November! We have high expectations for your next blog post

Mike Says:

Matt – Are you going to post again?

Bob Chandler Says:

Don’t take that shot. A virus is an ever mutating form and there is no cure. If there were the flu and HIV would have been cured years ago. I believe God designed a perfect digestive system (teeth and saliva in our mouth as the first step in breaking down food, then the acid in our stomach, the nutrients then secreted into our blood stream thru our intestines, etc). A shot by passes God’s design. In an emergency situation, to save one’s life, n fine; otherwise, DON’T Do It. This whole “swine flu” scare is nothing more than Big Pharma’s way to make Big Money.

Best To You…

Victor Says:

Hey Matt,

I am a South African and too come from a religious family and am a God Fearing man myself. Only just got to see who you are when I borrowed a friend of mines DVDs on the UFC and was very impressed with the way you fight, your sportsmanship and values.
To answer your question on the Swine Flu virus…..don’t take it bud! You know that God will bless and look after you. My older brother told me the otherday that there is/was a rumour going around that the reason the swine flu shot is being pressed is that they (not sure who) are going to or have put in a microscopic sized micro chip in the shot to monitor you. I am by no means a dooms profit but in Revalations Jesus does warn us of the “Mark of the Beast” and the end times. I think these methods are a start. Sorry I can’t give you more info.
I see you live on a farm or come from a farming background. I too live on a farm near Cape Town in South Africa. Live there with my wife and 4 year old boy, Gabriel. I am presently working in Baghdad as a PDS but will be home soon for good. Getting into my bow hunting too and am a keen Falconer.
If you are ever in South Africa, you must contact me if you ever want to come hunt on my farm. Got some good game to hunt.
Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up on that. All the best and God Bless!
