UFC 119

   September 23rd, 2010

Audra and I will be taking Hanna to her first UFC this weekend. This is kind of a trial test for Hanna to see if we will take her to my UFC in Detroit on November 20th, when I face BJ. So we’re going to go over tomorrow morning, I’ll catch the autograph session for the UFC at the weigh-ins and then have Friday night to ourselves, Saturday morning we’ll wake up and Audra has plenty of family activities planned out; then we’ll go to the fights Saturday night.

As for the fights on the card, I only want to comment on a couple of them:

Cro Cop vs. Frank Mir: Interesting fight, but I think Frank’s just got more ways to win. If it hits the ground, Frank will most definitely have the advantage. The question is can Frank get him there? The stand up could be pretty even, it just depends on which Frank Mir is going to show up for the stand up and also which Cro Cop is going to be there. They both seem a little hot and cold on their feet sometimes. So in conclusion, I would have to say that Frank has a little bit more of an advantage here.

Matt Serra vs. Chris Lytle: I really think Chris will win this fight as I thought he won the first fight, from the TUF finale. To be honest, Chris has the advantage on his feet and on the ground. I would also have to give the wrestling advantage to Chris and the only way I see Matt winning is that overhand right that he throws with his eyes closed. I don’t think Chris will let it go to a decision without it going his way.

Sean Sherk is going to fight also and I’m very interested in seeing him again. I’ve known Sean for a long time and I think he’s a good guy and I’m glad to see him getting in there again. I don’t know much about his opponent, though, so I can’t really say anything about the fight itself.

Like I said in the first paragraph, I’ll be fighting BJ on November 20th in Detroit. Dana called me less than two weeks ago and asked me to take the fight. After a brief conversation with my wife, we decided yes; so I texted Dana back and told him I’d take it. Yes, it was a sad day at the Hughes house as I had to give up quite a few hunts that I had planned in order to take the fight; but three paychecks this year will keep the wife happy.

Here is the Bible verse for this week:

When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:20-23)

Matt – Excellent decision to fight BJ and glad to hear your wife supports you. I think once you wear him down a little and get him to the ground, you will pound him out again. I agree with your pics for the UFC this weekend and either way don’t want to see Matt Serra win! May God continue to bless you Matt. He is the reason you are where you are today. He had a plan for your life from the start. Continue to give Him the glory and He will continue to bless you and your family. Mike

Adam McCammack Says:

Matt you do realize this fight takes place during Illinois shotgun season don’t you? Not that I have any room to talk, I am trying to talk the wife into going.. Good luck in the fight if I do not see you before then..

Kevin Says:

Looking forward to watching the fight that retires BJ! Good luck Matt, we are all behind you!

Boomer Says:

Have fun buddy!! Look forward to seeing you guys soon.

Jon Says:

Wow…I’m trying to talk the wife into driving to Detroit from NC to watch you beat BJ. HAHA either way get a good sweat in like Marquardt and I’m sure you’ll be just fine.

Thrash Says:

Can’t wait to see it. You’ve looked like a world beater lately and BJ seems on the decline. Not that you don’t already have enough experience with the man, but make sure the fight goes down often and early. You have seemed great on the feet lately, but Penn is a completely different monster. Just remember what got you there Matt. I feel that with how passive his BJJ has been lately, you shouldn’t have too hard of a time defending it and imposing your will. Pound the crap out of him or sub him again. Should be impressive enough for Dana to bump you higher in the standings and give a title push some legitimacy. Hope your daugher likes the event. I think Mir might actually have an edge on the feet too at this part in his career, although Mirko has the capability to end it faster. I honestly don’t see it being very competitive. Cro Cop hasn’t been injury free in a long time. And he hasn’t been throwing his greatest weapon with power in even longer. Lytle will be the champ one day in my opinion. Hungry guy.

Jerad Says:

I’m pumped about your fight against BJ, I have been a big fan of yours for years. I’m station in Hawaii and everyone are big BJ fans (duh right). I’m from Belleville IL so it’s really exciting for me to watch the fight, good luck Matt and I’ll continue to represent you while in Hawaii.

Josh Says:

Matt, I live here in Indy so here are a couple of suggestions for you and your family: St. Elmos is the considered one of the best steakhouses in the city (located downtown near Conseco), also we have a nice canal that flows throught the downtown area. My wife and i like to take a walk along the canal after eating downtown. Sorry this isn’t MMA related, but hope it helps you out.

wayne Says:

Thanks Matt – I needed to be reminded of that verse today.
Wishing you well for your fight against BJ – he’s gonna be mad/motivated after two losses and to think, you’re giving up your season for this. :(
I’ll try to remember to pray for you each time I take my bow in the woods. God bless.

Robbie Says:

Good luck to you with your upcoming fight! BJ will indeed be a def. animal than the first 2 times you faced him, but with hard work and preparation I’m sure you will find a way to come out on top. I know you’ve been working hard on your standup lately but nothing would thrill us more than to watch you dominate from top position like you used to! DOMINATE!!

dan Says:

it will be a tough fight but you have all the tools to make it go your way.
conditioning will be key!. BJ slacks in the later rounds @ welterweight…
good luck and looking forward for this fight. great respect and admiration!

Daniel Says:

cant wait to see you whoop BJ. There will always be bucks in the woods. Good choice, by the way love reading your blogs!!! Victory is in the air!!!

CRisCO Says:

“but three paychecks this year will keep the wife happy. ”

HA ain’t that the truth brother.

Joe Says:

It was awsome to see you and get your autograph. I hope you guys enjoyed Indy and you guys should check out the childrens musiem while there, your daughter would love it and it isn’t far from Conseco. Look forward to you fighting BJ again and from Fort Wayne to Detroit it isn’t that far so I’m going to try to get up there to see it.

After you beat bj go after gsp!!!!!!

Tito Says:

Good luck Matt!! Loking forward to your fight with BJ!! Bring home another W. WAR HUGHES!!

John King Says:

It was great seeing you at the signing. As always you are so kind and take care of your fans. I was 5 rows from the top at Conseco during the fight but I seen you and your little one by the ring. Looked like she was a bit restless but that’s expected. just wanted to say good luck and thanks for all you do. Thanks for the verse as well. God Bless.

Chad Estep Says:

Was at the fight’s in Indianapolis on the 25th. Your little girl is adorable made me want to get home to my little girl as soon as possible, even sooner since the fight’s were so bad ( except Chris and Matt I loved watching Matt get his face peppered!!!) I always loved you as a fighter and respect you even more for your Christian morals. I can tell you have the real thing and God will bless you for it. You have a wonderful family and thank you for being an inspiration to a fellow Christian. Good luck in Nov. and may God bless you for your Christian stand.

Jonathan Harwell Says:

Thanks for coming out. Met you at the Bright House of all places. It’s great for you guys to come out and do that. Can’t wait for the BJ fight and for you to regain your title next year.

Ministry Addict Says:

comment on Bible Verse: According to the Bible, everyone has sinned, and all sin is against God, Who is holy and just. The wages of sin is death (eternal separation from God). But God, Who is also loving, would rather give you a free gift than pay you what you have earned. (Romans 6:23). This gift must be received by faith. You cannot work for it. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 10:9,13)

Eternal salvation comes from believing that Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world, and specifically your sins – that He was perfectly sinless, God’s perfect Sacrifice Who died in your place – that He was buried, and rose from the dead on the third day, according to the Scriptures – and that He is alive and able to save you now. (John 3:3-7, John 3:16, I Corinthians 15:3-4)

comment on fight: I think this will be a great match-up. I almost always pull for BJ, but I would really like to see Matt win this one, and I believe he will. This fight will be at 170, right? I don’t remember Matt fighting at 155 before.

dustin dwyer Says:

Good picks matt! i think u got them all right… anyways i just wana say good luck with BJ im sure hes nothing u cant handle.
Train hard like always!

Ricky Says:

Kent Says:

Was super stoked to see the info come out that you locked in the fight for UFC 123 with BJ. We all know Edgar has just proven that he doesn’t train as hard as he should, however we know your country boy work ethics and training will put the final nail in the coffin!

Lynnette Says:

Where’s your update Matt? How’s training going?

Stew Says:

Matt, I am a 50 year old father of 4. 3 boys, 1 girl. We watch UFC fighting often and I must say the Trigg rematch was one of the greatest battles I have ever witnessed. I found myself with one butt cheek on my recliner armrest by the end of the fight. Then I discovered who you are and what you are about. I saw the verse on your shirt and jumped up and got close to the TV to read it. This morning i found your website and read the bio. Thanks for your commitment to Christ and your willingness to represent Him in you sport and acknowledge Him in your victories. Young boys today are faced with so many empty “heros” to follow. A guy like you can have a huge impact and the cross you carry is a great witness. We are a Team Hughes fan now and will be pulling and praying for you and your family.

MPMajorMike Says:

Matt – We need any updated on your training for BJ! Please post soonest.

Kharent Says:

I wish the best fight ever for you Matthew.

Kharent Says:

Advance Happy B day!!! I wish happiness for your family and for you as well of course its your B day.

Erik Says:

Happy Birthday!!! Hope your training and everything else is going great! Good luck on your fight with B.J. It’s gonna be a tough one.

Victor Augusto Says:

Matt, for this fight, read Proverbs 21: 31 !! I know that’s gonna be a hard one , but I do trust in God’s hands and of course , the power coming from yours .

keith silva Says:
