UFC 121 Results

Boomer, Boomer, Boomer… as I’m sure all of most of you know, Boomer is a buddy of mine that I met from the forums. Boomer has a bad habit of betting on the fights with me. Once again, Boomer owes me some money.

Interesting night of fights, I had several offers to bet on Brock, but I just didn’t place any bets on him. I didn’t know a lot about Cain, but I did know that he had some good wrestling credentials, he had better striking abilities, and he was going to use a lot more movement in the fight. So, I didn’t think Brock was going to lose like he did, but I knew there was a good chance Cain could get his hand raised. UFC kind of made a big deal about it. I really don’t know why, but I’m glad that the Mexicans have a heavyweight champion.

I consider myself an old guy and when some of the older fighters fight, I find myself interested. Tito was on the card, against Hamill and I didn’t think there was any way for Tito to win. Tito’s got that clothing line out, Team Punishment, and when I see people wearing the shirts, I always tease them that it should be “Team Punished;” but I would even go out on a limb and say that’s the last time we see Tito in the UFC.

Jake Shields fight was interesting to me. Jake ran out of gas, but still ended up getting the split decision. From a technical view, Kampmann had a terrible fight, in my opinion, he gave the fight to Shields. One thing I will say is Joe Rogan’s commentary was a little off during the fight. The ground game was pretty even in my book with Shields doing a little more controlling. Kampmann escaped to his feet several times and Kampmann had more submission attempts than Shields had, but listening to Rogan, you would have thought Shield had submitted him the first ten seconds of being on the ground. I really think the UFC could use a third man doing the broadcast, that has some experience inside the octagon. I don’t disagree with everything Rogan says, but there are a lot of things he says that I just laugh at.

Now back to that bet Boomer made, I’m sure I’ll forget all about it and the next time I see Boomer he’ll fork over 3 large and I’ll ask him “what’s this for?” and he’ll have to remind me.

I’ve got a couple of videos for you. One is a trailer for the Texas Trophy Hunters show that I mentioned in my last blog and the other is a video that the boys at LaserLyte put together:

The Bible verse for this week:

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent.” (John 6:29)

nice to hear you snap at joe a bit. i love the guys commentary, but his bias is clear in almost every fight. everytime you fight he criticizes your standup and calls you one dementional. ok…then tell the fighters to stop matt’s takedown and not get pounded or submitted. don’t hate the player, hate the game joe.

Steven Says:

nice point of view Matt. its cool getting to listen to a figthers point of view of how the fights went. keep it up!

TreeTrunk Says:

Good post Matt. Enjoyed the part about Rogan’s commentary. Although I have to admit, I’m surprised to see it. Rogan comes off as someone who really likes you and once he gets wind of these comments, he’ll probably be a bit biased against you in his commentary too. I do agree with what you said though. His commentary is often very biased and sometimes downright comical.

Matt, Awesome video for the texas hunter. I don’t know if I’m ready to go hunting or go watch a ground and pound Matt Hughes dvd. ha. I agree with the fights, I had a feeling Brock was going to lose but I think he will be back because he does get better after each fight. I can’t wait to see you back in the octagon!! Hope your training is going well, god bless. If you need help with dragging deer out just let me know.

Michael B Says:

I think Matt said it best after Lesnars last fight about not know what type of shoes Brock had on but they had to be running shoes. I may be off on exactly what he said but it’s close enough.
Rogan drives nuts sometimes and he is always bad mouthing Matt but at the same time Rogan does a fair job. Goldburge is the one who really stinks. Always says asinine things like “the biggest match-up in UFC history” or ‘The greets fighter in the world”.
According to him every fight is the biggest fight in US history.

Boomer Says:

And matt has a bad habit of taking my bets ….. as I said before my friend … even a broke clock is right twice a day. I’ll have my day .. oh yes.

And what a glorious day it will be …..

Tex Says:

Very interesting comments Matt. I pretty much agree. But I do think Rogan is by far the best announcer there is.

Andy Says:

While I agree that the fact Cain is of Mexican lineage is a little overplayed, part of the reason it is such a huge deal is that its the first time in any combat sport (MMA, boxing, kickboxing, etc.) that the heavyweight champion has been a Mexican.

Hispanic fighters have been a large number of the big draws for boxing for the last 10-15 years in most weight classes, so this helps expand to that market at a faster pace. While I don’t think Dana’s planning on a UFC in Mexico City any time soon, it is the largest metropolitian area in North America, and the 5th largest in the world, so there’s a lot of theoretical room for growth there.

Joel C Says:

Matt, you are my hero!

Erock Says:

Some very good points. I agree that Tito’s probably done in the UFC (I think Dana kind of hinted that in some of his post-fight interviews). Although if they can make Tito vs Chuck 3 happen, then that’s about the only future I see for him in the UFC.

I agree with your comment on Rogan’s commentating. I love his energy, and I think he’s a great color guy, but it would be nice if they had a former fighter that has a better idea of what is truly happening in the cage as a 3rd man. Pat Miletitch has done a great job on the Strikeforce shows, maybe you can convince him to jump ship…

Matt,
Hope training is going well for you. You know Bj’s going to be coming in guns blazing after two losses to Edgar. Utilize the leg kicks to nullify his boxing. Execute your game plan and get the win.
Rogan is a BJJ guy and he always favors those over the wrestlers, but he’s come a long way over the years. I think Randy would be an excellent at ringside, providing commentary. What would really be awsome is Randy, Chuck and Tito doing the commentary – LOL Now that would be entertaining.

Jack Says:

The thing I like the most about Rogan is that he brings an honesty to commentary that you don’t see very often. One aspect of that that I appreciate is when he acknowledges that the fans are chanting in unison. For instance, if everyone is chanting “BULL****!”, he mentions that and comments on it. What a commentator (even the “good”, famous ones) usually does is to completely ignore that, insulting your intelligence and basically censoring what’s going on. That kind of honesty is refreshing.

David_Banner Says:

I didnt see Rogans comments being to off, imo. As already stated, Rogan is a big BJJ guy and watching a guy like Shields, everybody expected a sub to come out of every takedown. As for Rogan bad mouthing Hughes, that is pretty much false. Rogan actually came on the Forums a year or so ago and clarified some comments that were taken out of context that made it sound like he was bad mouthing Matt. Rogan is a solid guy that calls it as he sees it. If he is guilty of anything its talking from his perspective and not a handler/teleprompter.

Also, I’d like to comment on the big deal the UFC made about the Mexican HW thing. We all know Illegal immigrants and Mexicans in general have been taking a pounding in the press. SO much so where its now acceptable and legal to stop any Mexican and shake them down just because they are Mexican. Granted, I am all about Boarder safety and the protection of this amazing Country but Mexicans are just as big of a part of this Country as Whites, Asians, Indians and Blacks. I’m glad the UFC gave such great support to Cain/Mexicans, it shows just how forward thinking and respectable Frank, Lorenzo and Dana really are.

NateR Says:

Except Cain Velasquez was born in California, so he is not a Mexican, he is an American. If you are the type of person who must label other people, then he could be considered a Hispanic-American or Latino-American; but under no circumstances could he be considered a Mexican unless he renounced his US citizenship and became a naturalized Mexican citizen.

As for you claim that it is now legal to “shake” down Hispanic-Americans in this country, that is absolutely 100% false. You’ve allowed yourself to fall for the lies being spread by the media. That has NEVER been legal and there is NOTHING in Arizona’s immigration law that allows that. That’s just as bad as the lie that illegal immigrants make positive contributions to this nation. And before you start throwing around accusations of racism, then you should know that my father was born in Mexico and was brought to this country legally when he was a baby. He was raised in Arizona, then became a naturalized American citizen at the age of 18. With that in mind, my dad’s main criticism of Arizona’s immigration laws is that they aren’t tough enough to stop the problem of illegal immigration.

David_Banner Says:

So Nate,in accordance with Arizona State law, when is it acceptable to ask a Mexican looking person for papers? As for Cain being Mexican, you should tell Cain he’s not a Mexican and to drop the act, because thats what you’re saying right?

Victor Augusto Says:

Watcing UFC 122 now and wondering how fast and strong you are … there’s no doubt youre goin’ to win . BJ Penn… what a joke!!! Don’t worry, I’m praying for you . Sorry !! I ‘m not around as I used to be… but I’m working so hard. When I finally met Gods words I could understand about that versicle on the tee’s back … God answers all my prayers from now on… thanks, my friend, as always… you also give me strength that I need to carry on. Keep up the good work !!! God bless you and all your family !!!

Daren Croy Says:

Good Morning Matt and the rest of Team Hughes,
Saw you in the interview with Rogan last night during 122 and it reminded me that you’re only a week away from a big fight. I’ll be praying for you and your family as you gear up for 123. Take care.

Marty Says:

Adam Says:

I was excited to see Cain get that win. I called it before the fight that it would be TKO 1st round and my friend Whitey thought there was no way! I wish I had put some money down on that one. HAHA. To bad I am not really a betting man.

Hank Stout Says:
