Preparation for UFC 123

   November 14th, 2010

I’ve had a great training camp getting ready for BJ. I split my time between Salt Lake City and the HIT Squad. As most of you know, Jeremy is one of the great grapplers when it comes to fighting. Also, Matt Pena now lives out in Salt Lake, so he’s come up with the game plan I’m going to use on my feet. Back at the HIT Squad it’s been good. Since Brian (Foster) is getting ready to fight on the same card the training has been hard. So I’ve had some great partners to help me out here at home. I really believe that my body’s ready both physically and mentally for this fight.

Here’re my sponsors for this fight. I ran out of room, so I had to take Dale’s Harley Davidson off of my banner for now; but I’ll pick them back up next time. You’ll notice some new sponsors and that’s because of the hunting show:

Got this emailed to me and thought it was pretty funny, hope you enjoy it too:

A DEA officer stops at a ranch in Texas, and talks with an old rancher. He tells the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.” The rancher says, “Okay , but don’t go in that field over there,” as he points out the location.

The DEA officer verbally explodes saying, ” Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me.” Reaching into his rear pants pocket, he removes his badge and proudly displays it to the rancher. “See this badge? This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish…. On any land. No questions asked or answers given. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand? ”

The rancher nods politely, apologizes, and goes about his chores.

A short time later, the old rancher hears loud screams and sees the DEA officer running for his life chased by the rancher’s big Santa Gertrudis bull……

With every step the bull is gaining ground on the officer, and it seems likely that he’ll get gored before he reaches safety. The officer is clearly terrified. The rancher throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs…..

” Your badge. Show him your BADGE!”

To all the servicemen out there I hope you had a happy Veterans’ Day. I flew Matt Pena here last week, and he had told me the day before Veterans’ Day was the Marine Corps birthday. So, once again I hope all had a good Veterans’ Day.

A little bit ago we had Lincoln College up at the gym and I helped out with the wrestling workout that day. It was a little change for me as I’ve got out of wrestling and into MMA, but I had a good time coaching. Here are a few pictures of me with the Lincoln College wrestling team and a couple of me just grappling:

Here is the Bible verse for this week:

Where is another God like You, who pardons the sin of the remnant, overlooking the sins of His special people? You will not stay angry with Your people forever, because You delight in showing unfailing love. (Micah 7:18)

Nate Says:

Not all persons with authority are arrogant. One bad apple doesn’t mean the whole bunch is rotten! I pray that you will remember that the next time you encounter a law enforcement officer. Good luck at 123 brother! I will be rooting for you.

Lynnette Says:

Cant wait til Saturday Matt!! Not that you will need it, but good luck!!!!

John King Says:

jeffb Says:

tyburn Says:

“your badge, show him your badge” ahahahahahaaha, as one who is having to deal with dumbasses in authority at the moment, that joke sure made me giggle.

Fannar Says:

Joey Says:

Good Luck Matt, im looking forward to seeing some clinch slams during this fight it seems to me bj has had alot of trouble with those. I know your gonna go out there and try your hardest and I wish you the best!

wayne Says:

Matt – I see alot of places predicting BJ will win because of his greater motivation. I hope God blesses you with the right tools and gameplan to ruin those predictions.

anthony coronado Says:

good luck matt happy too see you gave up some personal time for your fans could watch you fight again.

John Says:

Hey Matt,

I just wanted to wish you good luck against B.J. this Saturday. To be honest, I was one of your biggest detractors for a long time. I respected you as a fighter, but I was one of those people that wasn’t too fond of how you came off during your on the “TUF” shows. After reading your blog and your autobiography, I’ve come to realize that you’re a pretty good guy. I’ve been following MMA since 2002 and I have to say that your current win streak has been one of the most fun things to watch for me personally. Good luck.

Waylon Says:

I don’t know if you actually read these comments or not but I probably had the worst moment of my life yesterday. I thought of you when you spoke about praying when you were caught in a submission for God to get you out of it against Mr. Penn and a few minutes later I found myself out of it.
I am not a religious person, but you did cross my mind and I prayed at that moment. I am now safe.
I know you’re a Christian and if you do happen to read this by any chance, can you tell me you’re favorite biblical passage and recommend any to a person who is a bit unsure?

Ministry Addict Says:

Waylon: Sorry, I know you wanted to hear from Matt and not some other commenter, but while you’re waiting, here are some Bible passages which present the basic essential truths of Christianity:

Q. Who is God?
A. He is the only One with the right to make eternal laws, to eternally save, and to eternally destroy. (James 4:12)

Q. What are human beings?
A. They are God’s creations, who, because of the sin of the first human being, are all born in sin, and are all deserving of God’s just punishment. (Colossians 1:16; Romans 5:12; Ephesians 5:6)

Q. Who can save human beings from the punishment they deserve?
A. Only Jesus Christ can save them. (John 14:6; Acts 4:12)

Q. Why is it that only Jesus Christ can save human beings?
A. He is God’s only begotten Son (John 3:16; John 3:18; I John 4:9), Who, being made fully man (John 1:14), while remaining fully God (Colossians 2:9), paid the price for their sins (John 19:30), in their place (II Corinthians 5:21; I Peter 2:24).

Has Jesus Christ saved you from God’s just punishment? Do you believe with all your heart that Jesus Christ lived a perfect sinless life? That He died on the Cross for your sins? That He rose from the dead on the third day? That He is alive today, seated at the right hand of God the Father, and that He alone is able to save you, by God’s grace, apart from any of your own works or attributes? Seek Christ the Savior with all your heart today. Search out the answers to these crucial questions in the Bible, God’s Holy Book of absolute Truth.

Quell Says:

Will someone tell Dana it was going to cost extra for Matt to fight this weekend? This weekend is shotgun season for deer here in Illinois. Matt’s gonna miss out on it. Good Luck Matt!!

Ken McKinley Says:

I think it would be quite fitting if your fighter on this season of T.U.F. were to win it all, being that he’s on GSP’s team. Wouldn’t that be ironic? Anyway… I’m praying for you on Saturday.
Sola Deo Gloria!

John Sharpe Says:

Badge!? I don’t need no stinking badge!!! Good luck, I do believe you have a definitive edge over BJ in enough areas to win, plus you’ve got heart, so go out and win big.

hank stout Says:
