Trophy Hunters TV

Some Interesting Reading

   June 4th, 2012

Sorry about the delay, I’ve been helping Mark in the field and been traveling a lot as well. I got a couple of interesting emails that I wanted to share with everyone.

The first article is one that really hits close to home for me:
Rural kids, parents angry about Labor Dept. rule banning farm chores

I wouldn’t be the person I am without working on the farm and I think it’s totally ridiculous that the federal government would try to do this. I think kids need to learn the value of hard work as early in life as possible and this kind of law would just encourage the entitlement mentality that many young people are taking with them into adulthood. The attitude that we deserve to have everything handed to us for free without working for it is one of the reasons that I believe this country is going downhill so fast. Fortunately, the proposal was withdrawn because of public outrage; but that doesn’t mean that this administration isn’t going to try again.

This next email is just a cool story. Even though I have no idea if this really happened or not, I still think it’s an excellent illustration of the real consequences of socialism:

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama’s socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama’s plan”. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A…. (substituting grades for dollars – something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little..

The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. It could not be any simpler than that.

Remember, there IS a test coming up. The 2012 elections.

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you’ll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Matt,
Per usual, the right wing propagandists have deliberately distorted this “farm chore” legislation. I think it was the palin on fox “news” that started this, with a load of hot air about Obama forbidding children to do farm chores. Good rule of thumb is, if it sounds wrong, designed to elicit an emotional response, it’s probably B.S. As is this case.
Excerpt from the bill:
The proposed agricultural revisions would impact only hired farm workers and in no way compromise the statutory child labor parental exemption involving children working on farms owned or operated by their parents

andy Says:

hey matt met you in davenport fl.. how did the gator hunt go???? hard work builds character and we are in need of that these days

NateR Says:

Interesting viewpoint, Roger, but if this was all just “right wing propaganda” as you claim, then why did the Obama administration retract the proposal? Seems to me that they would have stuck to their guns if the public outrage had absolutely no truth to it.

Brian M Says:

Nate, “interesting” is a very nice way to put Rogers comment. Funny how for decades young americans have been helping make things click around the family farm, or the neighbors farm and yet now its a problem. Just another example of how this administration feels the need to over legislate and control every facet of our lives in an effort to remove our liberty and stifle our freedom. I wish people like Roger who appearantly support the methodology of our current administration would immerse themselves in a culture that currently practices such things as socialism, wealth redistribution etc… To see just how well it does work. Greece may be a good place to do that.

Scott Says:

Matt you hit the nail on the head, just try to get a teen to come and load square bales or clean out pigs or horses. Manual labour and taking pride in sweating for a living is well on its way to extinction.

Gavin Says:

It was withdrawn because the intention of the bill was grossly exaggerated and became a public relations nightmare.

Sometimes, the better form of valor is … oh nevermind.

Sadly, at the end of the day, rational discourse isn’t the only victim.

NateR Says:

Sorry, Gavin, but I don’t buy that. The Obama administration seems to be perfectly willing to cling to other “public relations nightmares” (**coughcough** Obamacare **coughcough**), so I have a hard time believing that this proposal was simply a victim of bad publicity.

Gavin Says:

Hilda Solis is the present head of the US Department of Labor, “the Secretary of Labor.”

While she was appointed by President Obama, she has annoyed the left community by continuing many of the policies of her predecessor that they expected she revoke.

hey matt or nater,
has matt heard anything on if he will have another fight?? im sure im not the only fan waiting and wanting to know

thanx,

is matt going to have another fight

Roger Peterson Says:

True, kids these days don’t like to sweat for pay, they don’t know the meaning. But we have eliminated thier jobs
of baling, walking beans, detasseling and barn cleaning with efficient technical equipment we have today. We see
big bales or hay being, lift by front lifts on tractors that stack those 8 bales on a wagon, detasseling machines, better
chemical as the culivator sits in the shed.

hayman Says:

hi guys, i remember 4 years ago when the election was coming the common worry was about gun reform, and taking away the right to bear arms. well that hasnt changed, nor has incomes of people. its not the goverments job to provide jobs to people thats the problem its the person who has to find a job and make the best of it, people like matt. the government will never be socialist or do income sharing. that thought is way left wing and nuts to even consider, but its propaghanda at its best for those who choose not to inform thenselves. the policies would have never stopped kifds working with thier parents, more left wing propaghanda. my posting name is my last name, and proudly so. my family had the name given over 500 years ago as we worked the fields and took pride in doing so. we started in a town called kent in the uk, moved to the usa, then spread to all of north america as farmers. rules and laws will never change tradition and heritage. to even listen to someone suggest otherwise is nuts, and laughable, even if sarah palin is saying it id walk away laughing. no government dictates how we live our lifes.

graham Says:

That whole economics class socialist experiment probably never happened either. At least not in the name of Obama: http://www.snopes.com/college/exam/socialism.asp

john hohn Says:

Get the gov out

John Ballard Says:

I agree with you on your points about Socialism, but I really don’t think that’s what Obama is going for. I simply want the upper class to pay the same amount percentage wise in taxes that I do. When I read stores about Buffett’s secretary paying more % wise than her billionaire boss, I really don’t think that is right. Everyone should be on a level playing field. I know we live in a global economy. I have seen firsthand what that does to the many people that sit around me at work and I watch their jobs get outsourced to India. Why do I still have a job? I have my job because I work harder than anyone else around me so that I can provide for my family. I’m not looking for a handout. However, under the existing system, the middle class continues to be left in the dust and the gap between the have’s and have not’s continues to get bigger and bigger. My son is 3 years old. I’ve already started saving up for his college, but will it be enough? I put my faith in God that I raise him to be a good, Christian, and compassionate man. In our current political system, it seems that one side is always pointing figerns and fighting with the other. I’ll teach him to hear both sides and work with others towards a solution that benefits everyone…..not just the far left or right….

Hope to see you fight again buddy. Sometimes I wish I was out working on a farm rather than sitting in this cube all day….. :-)

Roger Peterson Says:

If you want to change the government, vote in November. 2. Some are asking Matt when he fight again, I think
that’s decision is between Matt and his wife. And Remember Jesus Christ our Lord is Oue Solid Rock,
Everthing else is Sinking Sand.

Crystal Lynn Says:

GREAT READ!!! I have been a Union member for over a decade now, and I was “told” to vote for Obama, but I couldn’t, even when faced with being black-balled. I didn’t believe in him 4 years ago, and i don’t believe in him now. No matter how much we educate ourselves in the political realm, one will never be privy to comprehending everything it entails, however, i do understand that ObamaCare will NEVER work. The blog above is the best explanation and example of it that i have ever heard, and I will share it and it’s insight, regardless of the repercussions. It’s like the old saying goes, “You’ve got to stand for something, or you’ll fall for anything”…. The good Lord knows that the U.S. is falling apart fast. It’s time to make a stand, it’s time to restructure, and it’s time for “CHANGE”. Let’s get rid of Obama, and start repairing these United States and it’s people, not the political “gamers” of the world who are only interested in repairing the holes in their pockets. Thanks again, for sharing the great post, God Bless.

Dave Says:

Matt,

Just wanted to drop a line and say that i am looking forward to hearing you speak at USTRANSCOM today.

>>The attitude that we deserve to have everything handed to us for free without working for it is one of the reasons that I believe this country is going downhill so fast.

I agree with you 100%, matt.
* congress is entitled to collect retirement at age 50 while pushing for the rest of us to be able to collect social security at age 70
* congress gets free government health care and a free private subway while my family’s claims get denied by insurance companies we’ve been paying for our whole lives and have to pay $4/gallon to oil cartels
* congress gives free bailout loans to banks at a 1% interest rate while banks charge us a much higher interest rate to loan us money
* presidents only have to work 4-8 years and they get an unlimited amt of handouts to spend on anything (http://now.msn.com/now/0509-cost-former-presidents.aspx) – on top of the $1M pension presidents get, bush gets every yr he has spent $850K on phone calls and bill clinton has spent over $1M for his electricity bill (?!!). former first ladies also get free money totaling hundreds of thousands even though they never actually worked.

as for socialism, if you are going to speak against it you should walk the walk. stop hunting in Canada, a country that has socialized medicine and for the most part is fully socialist with extremely high taxes to fund their socialist agenda. You can hunt here in the USA, spend your money in the USA, and stop giving your tourist dollars to socialist Canada.

That’s my 2 cents, thanks for hearing me out and God bless.

r-dawg Says:

P.S. you know defense contractors boeing, lockheed martin, etc. that design weapons that our armed forces use? they sell their defense technology to china which is a communist/socialist country also. most of our goods are unfortunately “made in china”. i don’t see any of our government officials who speak out against socialism pass any bills to stop trade with china or prevent US defense contractors from selling weapons to china. maybe you should stop assuming only one person (barack obama) is responsible and start holding all political parties and people in DC accountable. it’s just too easy to think voting out obama will dissolve support for socialism.

r-dawg Says:

this usa today article says the bill was introduced to help prevent teens and kids from dying in the heat of working on farms

http://www.usatoday.com/money/companies/regulation/story/2012-06-10/child-labor-rules-farms/55556072/1

i don’t get why opponents of this bill simply didn’t say “ok let’s modify it – allow kids to work on farms but put some provisions that protect them from being overworked and ensured that they have access to water and breaks and restrictions on time spent on hours in the sun”

oh i know why – b/c it’s easier to say everything is socialist or simplify it to dumb partisan politics.

John Ballard Says:

I really wish one day we can elect people that will work with the other side rather than simply pointing fingers and saying anything they can to stay elected. I’ve literally stopped watching any type of political news for this very reason. I know most people on this board don’t like Obama. That’s fine. On the other hand, I don’t believe one thing coming out of Mitt’s mouth. He’ll flip flop and say whatever it takes to get elected. As much as I read about and respect what Reagan did (I was a kid at the time) I don’t think we’ll ever see anyone like that come out of the GOP again. If he had been running right now, he would have been labeled a liberal and thrown under the bus. Once again, I don’t buy into this whole socialism thing that people keep spewing. Obama isn’t pushing for Socialism, he’s pushing for a fair shake. When all of the millionaires out there start paying the same tax rate that I do, then I’ll listen. When I don’t have to worry about an insurance company denying my wife’s claim for MS medication b/c it’s a pre-existing condition, I’ll listen. When someone decides to fix social security instead of pushing it off until after an election, I’ll listen. No one….Democrat or Republican is willing to do anything about these issues because they want to stay elected and continue to push the agenda that is currently for their party in the mainstream media.

As for the whole thing about pushing a bill to keep kids from working on a farm….once again I think that’s some politician trying to get their name in the news.

Would love to see Matt fight again, but as a family man, I understand if that doesn’t happen. I hope that he enjoys working on the farm, spending time with his brother and family, and keeps spreading the good word of our Lord.

I suppose I should get back to work now….. :-)

From Mike Pennell, former pastor of Elwin United Methodist Church. Quote for todat: The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Jesus. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where is was written (18)”The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has annoited me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free. (19) to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Great story! And all so true.
Although I live in the Netherlands I follow the politics in the US and I hope that the Americans will listen to people like you and make wise decisions in the following election.

Giving to the poor. My church helps out once a month at the local soup kitchen where our pastor is on the board.
Last month we collected 395 mac & cheese boxes given to the Salavation Army food pantry from a congregation of 160. Bless you Jesus. Last weekend a church couple celebrated their 50 wedding anniversary asking for no gifts but donations to the food pantry. They collected 300 plue boxes and cans from family, friends and church members. Praise the Lord. Our church is trying to make a very small dent in giving to the poor. From Elwin UMC.

Hello, my friend ! Long time no see you ! Thank God I’ve been working a lot ! But I always remember about you … my oldest daughter always asks : ” daddy … and what about that friend of yours who gave you that beautiful Tee ? Won’t he ever fight anymore ? ” I think it’s time to come back to where you belong… God bless you and your family … always ! You may not know… but you’ve changed my life when I realized that you are a Jesus follower … since then, I became a new person … so I’ve got to say … thank you !!!

Roger Peterson Says:

How come the Democrats keep saying we are better off than four years ago, when we are not. I’m a farmer,
but also a secretary for my Township cemeteries. I have seen more creamation than ever before cause people
cannot pay for a proper burial space, their ashes has been buried on top of their parents plots. And these people
are in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. That’s sad, so how are we better off than four years ago?

Roger Peterson Says:

I need to clarify about the township cemetery policy on ash burials. We allow ashes to be buried on top of their parents plots or at their foot of the grave. We work with them trying to get sometimes the lowest possible cost of burying their loved ones. Some cemeteries only allow ashes to be buried in an receptacle, we do allow just a small box, 6″ x 10″ . We don’t allow anyone to spread these ashes over the top of the grave. Out of the twenty-six burials so far this year, six has been ashes burials. And anymore some ashes can be put into the headstone without someone burying a hole for you, which also cuts down the cost.

Happy independence day to everyone!

Brent S Says:

You hit everything right on the head Matt. I grew up working on a farm raising cattle and growing gardens. We didn’t have to, as it wasn’t my dads profession, he just wanted us to learn the same values and work ethic he had. He has been gone for over a decade and I still thank him for all that he taught me. He made me a man and you can’t put a price on that. I would just like to say you are not only one of the best fighters than ever lived, but a fine role model and an intelligent guy who really gets what life is all about. Thanks so much for entertaining me all of those years. You were the guy that got me back into viewing MMA and it was worth it. Keep tossin them bales and totin feed bags brother!

red rover whistle blower Says:

Hey “john” in no way is obama trying to give everyone a fair shake. Its irionic that you noted people and politicians say things in the mainstream media whilst in the same comment you basically call Mitt a liar and a “flip flopper”. Only place ive seen that term used attached to Mitt is in the media. So you dont like people using the media when its something your against or perceive it as an agenda driven story, but when it fits into your agenda you will glady cut, copy, and paste quotes and terms used in the mainstream media. People have the ability and right to change their minds. I believed in santa claus as a child i do not as an adult guess im a “flip flopper” to. While i believe our government needs cleaning out the democrats historically always grow government, raise taxes and increase our debt. Thats not the reform we want or need. We let the government grow to big and over seeing and we will have stripped ourselves of the power vested in us. Massive government entities can lead only to one outcome control and surpression of free will and choice. And the tax debacle, its all in the numbers. Mitt did and does pay taxes and in fact will have paid more in taxes then low income to middle class family’s will pay in their adult lives. If i have $1,000,000 and pay 5% in taxes and you have $100,00 and pay 12% in taxes my 5% of my $1,000,000 is more than your 12%. What you should fight for is lower taxes on the low income and middle class. Or just watch the mainstream media cut copy and paste as needed and where it applies.

Mark Says:

I agree with your point regarding children should understand the value of hard graft on a farm at a early age, and something needs to be done to encourage that way of thinking.

Gary Says:

Politics will never change the world and politicians cannot legislate morality. We as Christians have a duty to support laws that are consistent with the word of God. Too many Christians get caught up in the political battle and loose sight of the real battle on earth. Our battle is not against men. Our battle is against Satan and his demons, who are trying to destroy the souls of men and women. Men can never change a nation, Only God can effectively change a nation. Until we stop focusing on the political battle and start focusing on the salvation message of jesus Christ, is when we will see God inspired change. Do you want to see our country change? Then do what the lord commands of all Christians and start sharing the Salvation message of our Lord Jesus Christ.
